Muriston FC Community Sports Hub

Livingston, West Lothian

AXN Architecture was appointed by Muriston Football Club to develop outline proposals for a new community sports and training facility in Murieston, Livingston, West Lothian.

The project was commissioned as a strategic fundraising and grant funding tool, providing the club with a realistic, cost-informed vision capable of supporting funding applications, stakeholder engagement and future development discussions. Working closely with the club, planning consultants and a quantity surveyor, we established a practical brief, achievable budget parameters and a robust architectural concept that balanced ambition with deliverability.

The proposed facility provides flexible accommodation for football training, education, community events and club activities, creating a modern hub capable of supporting the continued growth of one of West Lothian's longest established community football organisations. Muriston United Community Football Club was established in 1985 and became West Lothian's first community football club in partnership with West Lothian Council in 2000. The club operates from Bankton Mains in Murieston, Livingston and serves hundreds of players and families across the region.

Architecturally, the building adopts a simple and economical steel-frame form enhanced through careful composition and strong geometry. The bold entrance volume provides a recognisable civic presence while the larger sports hall is wrapped in durable low-maintenance materials designed to withstand intensive use. Deep overhangs, expressed rooflights and a restrained palette create a contemporary identity without unnecessary complexity or cost.

The design demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can elevate a modest budget. Rather than relying on expensive materials or complicated forms, the proposal uses proportion, light and clear massing to create a building that is confident, memorable and rooted in its community.

Although developed as a fundraising and feasibility exercise, the proposal establishes a clear vision for the future of the club and provides a strong platform from which future investment opportunities can be pursued.
