Blackhall Community Mosque & Community Hub

AXN Architecture were appointed by Blackhall Community Mosque to explore the transformation of the existing premises into a modern community hub and place of worship serving both the congregation and wider local community.

The project involved the extension, remodelling and reorganisation of the existing building to improve accessibility, flexibility and capacity whilst creating a welcoming civic presence within the neighbourhood.

Working closely with the client team, AXN Architecture developed outline proposals to assess the viability and long-term potential of the site. The design process considered accommodation requirements, circulation, accessibility, structural interventions, building services and future expansion opportunities.

The resulting concept demonstrates how a contemporary extension can work with robust, durable materials to create a sustainable and highly functional community building. Flexible meeting spaces, educational facilities, social areas and worship spaces were carefully integrated to support a wide range of community activities throughout the day.

The feasibility study provided sufficient information to establish project viability, identify technical constraints and inform future cost planning and funding strategies.

The architectural language combines the traditional masonry construction with contemporary interventions. A simple brick envelope establishes permanence and longevity, whilst carefully positioned timber-clad and render volumes create warmth, a playful identity and human scale.

Large areas of glazing improve visibility and natural surveillance whilst introducing generous levels of daylight into the principal gathering spaces. The projecting entrance volume creates a clear point of arrival and establishes a civic presence appropriate to the building's community role.

Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the design process. High-performance building fabric, solar photovoltaic panels and low-energy design principles were integrated from the outset to minimise operational costs and reduce environmental impact.
