36 The Calls Design Competition Leeds

Exhibition & performance venue

36 The Calls is conceived as a destination building for cultural, entertainment and civic use. Our proposal explored opportunities for exhibition spaces, art galleries, performance venues and flexible gathering spaces. The building was envisioned as a catalyst for activity along the waterfront, encouraging visitors to engage with the canal, surrounding public realm and wider cultural life of the city.

We developed a proposal that sought to create a contemporary landmark Civic building whilst respecting the industrial character and grain of the surrounding conservation context. The design explored how new architecture could contribute positively to the skyline, reinforce the dynamic waterfront setting and create a memorable arrival point by canal within this important part of the city.
